Photographer's Note

'A highlight'?

Yes, we had travelled to The Hague to visit the Mauritshuis to view 'The Girl with a Pearl Ear-ring' by Vermeer, unaware that this painting was in the same museum.
We saw 'The Girl with the Pearl Ear-ring', but only just, as it was going to be moved later in the day for cleaning.

The Goldfinch was painted by Carel Fabritius, a pupil in 1641 - 1643 of Rembrandt, in Amsterdam.
Unfortunately, very few of Fabritius' paintings have survived. He was tragically killed at the age of 32 when the Delft municipal gunpowder magazine exploded in 1654.

Goldfinches were popular pets, and could be taught tricks.
Fabritius painted the goldfinch with clearly visible brush strokes. He depicted the wing in thick yellow paint, which he scratched with the handle of his brush.

I was thrilled to see this delightful little painting; it made my day!

Thanks for looking.
