Photographer's Note

The Kinderhuissingel is one of the many canals in Haarlem. Looking at the map and due to its curvy form is must have been just outside the city walls and was a part of the city defence system. The Kinderhuissingel is on the western side of the city.

On the eastern side you can find the Spaarne river which has always had and an important role for the economy of the city of Haarlem. The Spaarne river has raised the opportunity for many industrial and trade activities over the years letting the city grow and bloom.

The Kinderhuissingel can only be used by small private boats and by tourist tour boats similar to those in Amsterdam. Cargoshipping and larger private boats all go via the Spaarne river.

This photo was taken on the north western part of the Kinderhuissingel with the Kenaupark on the right. Kinderhuis means child house, so obviously at some point in history there must have been a child house situated somewhere along this part of the city defence works.
