Photographer's Note

It’s back to Holland for a tribute to our friend Hans from the area of Amsterdam.
Hans posted a beautiful picture of the Rotterdam ‘Zwaan’ bridge for Rinie and me, so I found it fitting to post a Amsterdam bridge pic in return.
This is one of the two red foot- and bicycle bridges between the Spoorenburg and the Borneo quarter of the ‘Oostelijk Havengebied’ in Amsterdam. It was late afternoon. Like the ‘Kop van Zuid’ in Rotterdam (a detail of the new Luxor theater in this area is here) it’s a former harbour area which is converted into a high density residential and commercial area. Other quarters are the ‘Java-eiland’, the ’KNSM-eiland’, the ’Rietlanden’.
This bridge is famous in its category. The international Footbridge Award was given to it in 2002. It was designed by IBA, the ‘IngenieursBureau Amsterdam’ , the civil engineering & public works department of the municipality of Amsterdam . It’s special in two respects: it wave-like appearance and it’s construction. It was entirely factory constructed (including the deck and the lighting) and just had to be transported to the site and attached to the land heads.
