New Roof for the Foundation

We are leaving Oslo in our search for remarkable details in architecture.
This scene full of blue buttons is in reality the roof of the new extension of the museum “De Fundatie” (the foundation) in Zwolle, the Netherlands.
The exterior of the building is an unusual combination of old and new architecture.
Of course, to understand fully this construction I added two workshops with a more panoramic view of the building.

Workshop 1 -Total view of the roof
Workshop 2 - Total view of the museum

The museum is situated in the former Palace of Justice
The law building at the Blijmarkt was designed in 1838 by the architect Eduard Louis de Coninck in neoclassic style. The building has a double symmetry with a monumental entrance hall and a central entrance hall on both sides.
In 1977, the building lost its function as the Palace of Justice and was converted into office for the National Planning Department. After an internal refurbishment by architect Gunnar Daan, the Museum - The Fundatie, has been housed in the building since 2004.

The extension of the former courthouse was designed by Bierman Henket architects in 2010. Hubert-Jan Henket has been able to convince the client not to extend beyond the existing building: that would eliminate the solitary and symmetrical character of the building. An underground expansion was spatially complex. Therefore, an expansion with an autonomous volume was designed on the monumental building.
As the Palace of Justice converges two worlds in the horizontal direction, Henket vertically links the classic, static building to the fluid dynamics of contemporary expansion.
The structure, like the substructure, is symmetrical in two directions, but has a shape that resembles a rugby ball. Together, the two totally different volumes form a new urban-engineering whole. Also in the interior are two views contradictory: the classical contraction of rectangular museum halls below, versus the flowing open spaces in the elliptical volume above it. Website Architect
