Photographer's Note

Gornji Stoliv, high above Boka Kotorska, Montenegro.

Stairway to Heaven? Well the stairway is in ruins, and Heaven, in the shape of the church tower, looks pretty shabby too! In fact, Gornji Stoliv, a tiny hamlet hundreds of feet up above the Bay of Kotor is now practically entirely abandoned. We walked from the bay up a lovely but steep and stepped path for about two kilometres, the only way into the village as far as I could see. Only one house seemed still lived in. The rest were all in serious decay, or actually ruinous, with roofs gone and weeds growing everywhere. But I believe the church is still consecrated, though I can't imagine much of a congregation makes it up that hill. Still it was very pretty. The cloud was down - so low that the village was in mist as we approached; luckily it cleared sufficiently for a few snaps to be taken. Flat light = monochrome conversion!
