A mirror that makes the world turn upside down

Anish Kapoor was born in Bombay in 1954 and has been living in London since the early 70s. Over the past twenty years, the artist has gained international recognition by exhibiting, among others, at the Kunsthalle in Basel, the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, not to mention the Tate Gallery and Hayward Gallery in the British capital. Group exhibitions have led him to Kassel’s Documenta IX in the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Whitechapel Art Gallery, the Royal Academy and the Serpentine Gallery in London, as well as the Jeu de Paume and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.

Both a painter and a sculptor, Anish Kapoor plays on opposition and ambivalence (empty-full, male-female, concave-convex, material-immaterial, visible-invisible…), which gives his works a certain mystery and intemporality. After a period during which his sculptures were covered with powder pigment, taking inspiration from his native India, Anish Kapoor later used solid quarried stone in his works.
