Photographer's Note

The impressive front entrance to the Transfiguration Orthodox Church in central Chisinau, Moldova, taken yesterday. Around 70 % of Moldova's 3,560,000 people identify as Orthodox Christian. During the Soviet era religion was frowned upon and a church belltower that was higher than the Soviet HQ across the street was blown up! Many churches were closed and or used as storage depots or even nightclubs. When the USSR collapsed in 1990/91, and Moldova once again became independent, many churches were returned to their former intended usage and restored to their former glory, and congregations returned.
