Photographer's Note

The war memorial church to the victims of the 1990-1992 civil war between Moldova and Transnistria (Transdniester). The Dniester River is behind me here and flows into the Black Sea near Odessa in Ukraine, about 100 km away by road. The river forms the border between Moldova and Transnistria. This breakaway republic is more Russian than Moldovan. It has its own border patrol, its own currency, police, separate passports, and the Cyrillic system of language is still used. Moldova ceased using it in 1989 and reverted back to Romanian based on the Latin alphabet.
