Photographer's Note

This picture is showing the bus terminus in Valetta in summer 2011, a few days before the system change (3rd July 2011). The maltese bus were both a public transport and a major tourist attraction. They had this particularity that the bus were owned by the driver. Each of them were customized and decorated according to the personnal taste of their driver except for the color which was yellow for the main island and grey for the island of Gozo. In addition to the personal customization of the bus, some of these bus have gone through rebuilding of their body in the local workshops making them really unique!

However, and unfortunately for the tourists, these bus and their driver had become very unpopular among maltese which were findings them very unconvient to use on a daily basis. And therefore, a private company, Arriva, has replaced the traditionnal bus system in order to try to make the system more efficient. Bus routes, drivers, and the old bus have been through substantial changes with Arriva. After some important problems during the transition, it is still difficult to determine whether the new bus sytem has brought the improvement expected by maltese.

With its new bus system, Malta has traded some of its charm for efficiency. I sincerely hope that maltese people could get a better quality of life with a better public transport system, but I regret that it is at the cost of reducing these old bus to be only a part of the maltese history.
