Ohrid is the pearl of Macedonia but ut us famous of its pearls. Here the tourists are looking at the display of Ohrid pearls, behind here the church of St. Sofia, one of many old orthodox churches (but there is also a mosque).

In Macedonia’s ancient town of Ohrid, two families hold the secret to the composition of the famed Ohrid pearls.
The Filevi and Talevi families have been making the jewellery in the UNESCO cultural heritage site since the 1920s, coating an emulsion with secret ingredients on to tiny pieces of mother-of-pearl.

“I received it (the secret recipe) from my father Nikola, my father ... from my grandfather Mihajlo, and my grandfather ... from my great-grandfather Nikola,” said Mihajlo Filev, the current owner of the family business.

The Church of St. Sophia is one of the most important monuments of Macedonia, housing architecture and art from the Middle Ages.

The church was built during the First Bulgarian Empire, after the official conversion to Christianity. Some sources date the building of the church during the rule of Knyaz Boris I (852 – 889).

Originally a synod church of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, later of the Archbishopric of Ohrid, it was subsequently converted into a mosque during the rule of the Ottoman Empire. The interior of the church has been preserved with frescoes from the 11th, 12th and 13th century, which represent some of the most significant achievements in Byzantine painting of the time. The main part of the church was built in the 11th century, while external additions were built by Archbishop Gregory II in the 14th century.
