Photographer's Note
‘Tetovo’s Painted Mosque - 3’
Yes, I really enjoyed my visit to the Šarena Džamija in Tetovo.
This time three pictures of its interior.
Even non-Muslims are allowed to visit the Šarena Džamija and take pictures. (For those who find this surprising, in the Maghreb countries this is very different)
I was kindly asked to leave as soon as the prayer service started. For which all understanding.
I was the only non-Muslim present in and around the mosque.
Tetovo isn’t exactly the most touristic city in North Macedonia.
The mosque was described in my guidebook as very beautiful and interesting. But I hadn't seen a single photo of it beforehand. So it was a very pleasant surprise on arrival.

Bonsoir Paul,

Hi Paul
A good daily life scene of the colourful interior of this mosque. I missed this area of North Macedonia to the west of Skopje. Well framed and composed with excellent interior lighting. Tfs!

Salut Paul,

Hi Paul,
fantastic series of photos from the interior of the mosque. It seems equally decorative inside as it is outside. I would probably choose the more decorative photo as the main one but they are all beautiful and I am sure most people will prefer the scene with people. They certainly animate the view even though they don't seem to be praying.
It seems they all wear short sleeved shirts with collars but they all leave the upper part unbuttoned.
Very well done,
M

Hello Paul,
The main photo is very nice and both WS are good complements. I recognize the views well from mainly Turkey, where non-Muslims are also allowed inside all mosques. I even have memories of being allowed to remain during prayer time somewhere, although I stayed discreetly in the background. I still think the decorations are slightly too much for my taste, like some kind of Islamic Neo-Baroque, but the carpets are nice. Your photos, especially this one, are entirely to my taste.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi Paul, the three photos are absolutely fantastic, they show the interior decorations in a very brilliant way, and also some elderly people who take advantage of the place also to talk about other topics as if they were at the bar ... ahaha ... I am not surprised that entry is allowed to all, in these areas the Muslim rules are not as strict as in Arab countries. Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano

Goedemiddag Paul,
Mooi foto werk, bedankt.
Nog een prettige zondagnamiddag,
John

The red/pink carpet is an eyes catching object, Paul. Than, looked at the decorative walls.
Well used the indoor's light in the mosque, people in their daily small-talk nicely captured.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Hello Paul, As you know, I love visiting all mosques. Usually, I can go inside, even being a woman. But often I had been dressed in an appropriate way. Oft even trousers are not allowed, it must be a long dress and head cover. Probably the only countries that the non-Muslims are not allowed are Morocco and Tunisia. I do not remember how it was in Saudi Arabia. Of course, the whole Makkah and Medina are forbidden. I do not remember if I was in any mosque in Jeddah. There were some problems for women in Baku. Anyway, fantastic scene. And I love this Arabic calligraphy. "Allah" I recognize at once.

Hallo Paul,

Hi Paul
As soon as I'd seen the thumbnail and read "Macedonia", I knew exactly where this photo was taken. :-) This is the first mosque I visited during my travels. More importantly, if I was to post an image from there, I'd write a very similar note: I was allowed to take photos and kindly asked to leave when prayers started.
I really like this image. It shows, what is for these people, an everyday scene but for us it's fascinating. As you say, not in every mosque you would be allowed to take this kind of photos. Good choice of portrait format as it allowed you to include the details of the colourful interior - the murals and the carpet.
The WS images complement the main one nicely.
Best wishes
Kasia

Bonjour Paul
