Hey, this here was a rather colorful border crossing post, near Gevglija, Macedonia. The writing on the next door is probably in Cyrillic alphabet. This is - I think - an interesting theme, and I really hope I dont offend anyone by posting it under Republic of Macedonia, not under Greece (which I love), since most of the letters are in Greek Alphabet, and because the situation over the naming dispute and symbols is still very active between these two countries, but what can I say - I dont yet have Rep. of Macedonia on the map yet, and the locomotive was most likely in it. Formalities aside, something about the naming dispute:

Macedonia is a region of Greece, but its also the now independant country of (Republic of) Macedonia. Under Yugoslavia, which RoM was a part of it was named The Peoples Republic of Macedonia. It was the most southern part of Yugoslavia, with Slovenia being the northernmost part (Thus a little song went "Od Vardara pa do Triglava.." - From Vardar (or Axios in Greek, the river which also crosses the border between these two countries) to Triglav (the highest mountain in Slovenia). Anyway, the naming dispute was sparked even as Socialist Yugoslavia, under Tito formed in 1946:

The borders of the present-day Republic of Macedonia were drawn in 1946 when the People's Republic of Macedonia was established as part of the newly proclaimed federal Yugoslav state under Josip Broz Tito. The issue of the republic's name immediately sparked controversy with Greece over concerns that it presaged a territorial claim on the Greek coastal region of Macedonia (see Territorial concerns below). The republic was later renamed the Socialist Republic of Macedonia but dropped the "Socialist" from its name when it declared independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in September 1991.

Wiki

After that the country was named Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYRM). Its now Republic of Macedonia.
The naming dispute is still ongoing and consists of many ethnological, symbolic, historical and lingual factors. Here`s one for all you transnationalist out there. :>

Well, hope its resolved soon, and hope nobody gets into any kind of heated political debate here. :)

If you look carefully on the list of the left you`ll see, the destination of the train. It went all the way from Thessaloniki to Ljubljana, via Belgrade. A 24 hour ride, but it was quite comfortable, although it was not exactly your luxorious 21. century Orient Express, but for 53€ it was more than decent.

A funny story, because later on in Skopje station, we were joined by some Slovenian folk singers, going home, and they started instantly with singing, eating and drinking wine. A taste of home, even before I got there so to speak. :)
