Photographer's Note

This is the Piazza del Campo in Siena, which is one of the most impressive town squares I've ever seen. Whe you go to Siena you have to walk through narrow streets, following the signs to find this place. As you get closer there is no indication that a large open space is near, and you wonder if you have taken a wrong turn. Finally, I went down through a narrow passage way, under an arch and down some stairs, so the view ahead was not really visible. Then I came out of the 'tunnel' and into the light and space of this huge square. The effect is quite amazing, even overwhelming, and I'm sure the designers did it intenionally, to enhance the visual power of the square. The Campo is so large that they hold a horse race here every year (the Palio), which absolutely packs the square.
