Photographer's Note

The lake on the plane of Rascno, near Fiamignano, in province of Rieti... on the limits of Abruzzo and Lazio region.
Chiaretta

On a little hill near this lake there is the ruin of a castle:
"A small castle (consisting of tower with limited bounding circuit wall) set on the hill dominating the lake and plateau of Rascino and thus controlling the pasturage for transhumant flocks. Two related medieval settlements were identified: an upper village attached to and flanking the castle; a lower village near the plateau road and the ruinous small church of S. Maria. These combine to suggest a high nucleated population in the Middle Ages. Excavations in the castle and in houses in each of the two villages indicate a contemporaneity of the varied settlement units, running from the 12th to late 14th century AD (a chronology in accord with the limited documentation linked to the castle). For the lowland village finds reveal economic activites related to transhumance weaving combs, heckle pins, spindle whorls and sheep bones. One can conclude that the role of the castle at Rascino was not purely military but was also economic, conditioned by the business opportunities connected to transhumance."
