Photographer's Note

The Duke in the labirith: Vicino Orsini's gaze.
This photo of the village of Bomarzo was shot from the famous Monsters' Park, built by Vicino Orsini Duke of Bomarzo in the XVI century. Vicino Orsini a brave condottiere after the peace of Cateau-Cambresisi, decided to retire in his fief, surrounded by humanists, literates and astrologists.
The Park, also called the "sacred wood" is famous for all the statues of monsters, giants, enigmatic figures and other aberrations. All the statues bear enigmatic inscriptions and the whole concept of the Park is believed to hide complex and esotheric simbols. Visitors are welcomed by the inscription "Voi che pel mondo gite errando, vaghi/ di veder meraviglie alte e stupende, / venite qua dove son facce orrende / elefanti, leoni, orsi, orchi e draghi” (You that are wandering through the world, willing/ to see high and splendid marvels / do come here where there are horrible faces/ elephants, lions, bears, ogres and dragons).
In the middle of the village you can see the severe facade of Vicino Orsini's palace.
