Fountain of the Maccabees
It appears to have been a much more accurate source than the others: some documents, in fact, attest to two reconstructions only during the 15th century; the first occurred in 1453 with the reuse of 12 stone slabs recovered from the demolition of an old source in Piazza del Mercato; the second in 1492 entrusted to a certain Rubeo de Florentia lapicida, probably Matteo di Francesco da Settignano.
Both the appearance and the original location are unknown. Some sources claim that until 1800 it was located in Piazza Pianciani. The basin is polygonal, made up of stone slabs and blocks that form twelve sides; the central column, simple and unadorned, ends with a small basin, inside which, on the occasion of the historic 1962 Sculpture in the city exhibition, Lucio Fontana placed one of his sculptures. It was restored and put back into operation in 2015. The name celebrates the cult of the Maccabees brothers, considered saints by the Catholic Church and the Orthodox churches; The origin of this dedication is not clear, but already in documents of 1453 the fountain is mentioned as "fontis Machabie".

I like the soft diffused lighting and pastel colours. Good sharpness and well framed and composed. Excellent graphism of the lighter toned fountain against the dark shadowed bg. Tfs!

It's a very elegant fountain and it's nicely balanced in the photo by the large flower pots to the left. The photo has a perfect sharpness and fine colours.

Ciao Silvio,
this is a very charming little square. There are plenty of elegant decorative elements like the fountain but also pots with plants or decorative portals. The only thing which I miss here is more abundant light. In a direct sunlight this place would be certainly more eye catching, but of course you cannot always have sun with you everywhere.

Good composition with the inclusion of the fountain in the right hand side. It stands out well from the dark door behind it. The façades add some nice and warm tones and the flowers are also a fine addition.

Buongiorno Silvio,
Wonderful mild light prevailed the fontana and surrounding houses. Well managed.
The name Maccabie has a Hebrew connection to the ancient times before the Romans took over what known as the Holy-Land i.e. Israel 2500 years ago. (also the Maccabie Tel-Aviv known sports-club nowadays).
