Caves of Quadratini and Finestroni - Vallerano (VT)

The two caves are located just on the edge of the town of Vallerano. Along the path, difficult to access due to the luxuriant vegetation, which leads to the first cave, there are some hypogean environments, now mostly used as a closet and, in the recent past as shelters for animals and stables, its genesis and original use. The Grotta dei Quadratini is characterized by internal walls perforated by more or less square niches, it is in fact a nice columbarium, a type of structure rather frequent in Tuscia. Even of this hypogean environment, construction period and first uses are ignored, it was almost certainly used for the breeding of pigeons, an activity that, in the Middle Ages, constituted an important resource, both as a source of precious animal proteins, and for guano, used as a fertilizer.
The nearby Grotta dei Finestroni is accessed through a sort of arch, created due to a collapse, then a hole leads onto a long corridor, along which several rooms open, including three large rooms, partially collapsed, with large openings towards the valley, hence the name of the site. In the last room you can see a pit, perhaps a burial. Even in this underground environment, the construction period and first uses are ignored.
The presence of graffiti crosses, apparently of late execution, and the structure of the hypogeum itself, suggest that it may have been used by a religious community linked to the nearby town.
The technique used appears decidedly refined, with well-smoothed walls, windows and openings to illuminate the interior.
Unfortunately, no literature has been found in the literature to clarify the many enigmas of these fascinating hypogean environments.

The path to reach the caves is not easy, it is recommended to avoid it for elderly people who suffer from vertigo, in any case wear suitable clothing and, above all, suitable footwear. An elementary prudence in movement is required for the proximity of the steep cliff walls and unprotected openings.
