Monumental cemetery of Spoleto
It stands on the slopes of the hill Luciano, at the foot of the magnificent church of San Salvatore, in a pliocene lake deposit with layers of gravel on impermeable clays. This should have discouraged the use of the area for cemetery purposes, suitable instead to form a magnificent urban park, already characterized by dense vegetation of beautiful cypress trees lined up in rows and interspersed with frequent specimens of viburnum with valuable arboreal bearing.
Designed in 1836 by architect Ireneo Aleandri (author of the Sferisterio di Macerata, who worked for many years in Spoleto, he also owes the Teatro Nuovo, the Municipal Slaughterhouse and the National Road - Inner Traversa), has kept intact the neoclassical taste above all in the part below the Basilica, where the staircase, designed in a theatrical way, serves as a link between the different levels. For those arriving from the cemetery through the main avenue, the scenographic effect of discovering the Basilica is extended.
On the sides of the staircase there are symmetrically arranged, with the function of scenic scenes, the two wings of the loggia destined to the burial of the illustrious men, in the most prominent position of the place.
Although not present in the first project of the Aleandri, it accords with the neoclassical purist style of the whole composition. Framed by pilasters, the graves are placed side by side showing, even in the singularity and peculiarity of each, the adherence to a homologous style in which the symbols of the Christian tradition stand out: the tree of life, the monogram of Christ, the rose, the palm, as well as some coats of arms of the Zacchei Travaglini families, Angelini Rota, Fratellini.
The Antonelli tomb stands out, adorned with a richly sculpted 16th-century altarpiece from the Racani palace; that Bachilli for the painting with Madonna and Saints Filippo Neri and Vincenzo Ferrer, the work of Jacopo Alessandro Calvi, who owes other important works in the city; those Sansi, Campello and Pucci della Genga, in which the rank of families is manifested in the monumentality of decorative solutions.
The minor works in terracotta and in artistic cements are also interesting.
