Photographer's Note

After fishes from the Napoli market, the sea creatures that are two thousands years old.

The beautiful mosaic of sea creatures, dating from the 1st century AD, was discovered in the House of the Faun in Pompeii, and now is in the Archaeological Museum in Naples.
The picture probably has a culinary agenda. It's like a menu-board. The creatures, one of each kind, are sharply islanded so we can identify them. The image celebrates the wealth and variety of available marine food, and uses its quite limited repertoire of colours – red, pink, brown, ochre, grey, buff, white – to conjure a real succulence and luminescence of sea flesh. At the same time, the presence of scene-setting elements such as rocks and coral suggests more. We're looking into the depths of something, maybe a tank, maybe a section of the sea itself, in which all these different individual creatures are swimming together. In the middle, a big octopus fights with a big crayfish.

I know that here there is no interaction with the visitors, it is just plain picture of a picture. But I liked the mosaics and frescoes of Pompeii so much. This is a famous example but maybe not all here know it.
I will upload two other beautiful mosaics as workshops.

I hope that you will like all three pictures. I have many more, of course, but I will not bore you with them ;).

Funny , after these last pictures I know a bit about your culinary tastes too. Some people like sea food, other hate it, specially the smell :).
