The city, founded probably in the eighth century BC, survived the first real prosperity under the rule of Arabic in the ninth century. and then under the dominion of the Saracens and the Normans who gave him the status of capital of the Kingdom of Sicily. Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio-name of this church comes from its founder Gorge Antochi admiral in the service of King Roger II. Built in 1143 on a cruciform plan, however, includes the middle Byzantine church. The church is known for its decorated interior where there are the twelfth century Byzantine mosaics. The original facade is presented by King Roger II receiving the crown of Sicily from Jesus.
