Notes: The Macaon is a butterfly of the family Papilionidae, mainly tropical family, of which only 9 species present in Italy.
With its approximately 8 centimeters of maximum wingspan, it is not difficult to meet and notice it especially in the countryside or in the hills since the beginning of spring (period in which the chrysalis flicker), until late autumn. Elegant and agile in flight, the male is also a defender of his territory; if you happen to see two of them hovering nearby in audacious acrobatics, probably one is trying to hunt the other.
Presents the typical behavior from Butterfly Hilltopping, or try to fly over the highest point of the land in which it is located (domain).

Male: Yellow with ribs and large black transverse designs. Postdiscal band containing a yellow shade in the anterior and blue in the posterior. Large orange spot in the anal corner of the hindquarters. Outer edge of the rear teeth with a tail at the third median rib.

Female: similar to the male but generally larger

Reverse: yellow with designs similar to the obverse, but decidedly lighter.

Caterpillar: green with black rings dotted with yellow, it feeds on Apiaceae, such as fennel and carrot. If disturbed, a pair of horn-shaped glands (osmaterium) are extracted from behind the head, which emit a repelling odor that keeps predators away.

Distribution: Europe, temperate Asia and Japan, Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of Canada and the United States, all of Italy.

Habitat: thermophilous species is found in meadows from the sea level to the mountain and cacuminal plain up to about 2500 meters s.l.m.

Annual Generations: Three with flickering in April-May, June-July and August-September.

Nourishing plants: Daucus carota, Foeniculum vulgare, Pastinaca sativa Ruta graveolens
