Photographer's Note

Castello di Ponte
It has Longobard origins, when there was a powerful steward called Pontano, known from the Farfensi papers, one of the few traces of the organization of the Duchy of Spoleto. Founded by King Lothair II, in 757, at the time of Duke Alboino, it extended its power over a large territory which included Visso, Triponzo, Norcia, San Pellegrino, Campi, Savelli and, in the territory of Casciano, Poggioprimocaso. The Rocca di Ponte protected the territory for a long time from the raids of the Saracens and from the enemy militias. Also in the ecclesiastical organization of the territory he had a hegemonic role: Ponte was in fact the seat of a parish at the head of a vast circumscription, which retained its importance at least until the fourteenth century.
