Madonna

The beautiful face of this Madonna still emerges from the now completely ruined church of the former parish church of Manigi, in the municipality of Cascia.
Located on the right wall, it is part of a lively 14th century Deposition, which has no comparison in other paintings for its originality and harshness of language.
The scene is resumed in the moment in which Christ is taken down from the cross: with a stake an apostle is removing the suppedaneo while the Arimathea hands the body to the Addolorata.
The Madonna in a youthful figure embraces the Son who is leaning on the mother's shoulder.
The Saint John is limited, as in the sculptural groups, to touching the left hand of Jesus.
Two angels in the air express pain in the Gothic way, touching their jaws.
Lower down, the kneeling Magdalene expresses her pain by screaming desperately as she raises the two long braids of hair with her hands; another pious woman is sitting in sad meditation with her hands crossed in slight abandon.

Hello Silvio,
I find WS #1 the most interesting photo for showing us the destruction of the church, but this fragment is very beautiful and absolutely worth to be seen. All photos are sharp and well exposed, so you had a difficult choice which one to use as main post.

Le sujet est bien cadré. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails de la fresque de la Madone. La lumière fait ressortir les couleurs. Bonne journée.

Ciao Silvio,il terremoto ha dato il colpo quasi definitivo a questa chiesetta in cui oramai poco rimane, ma la Madonna si è salvata, quasi un segno del destino. Poche speranze di avere lavori di conservazione, visto come procedono le cose a Norcia, figuriamoci qui...buona serata! Luciano

Ciao Caro Silvio,

Isn't it sad when you realise such beautiful works of art are slowly disappearing. Your w/s show the destruction of the church but you have been able to secure this sharp, close-up of the Madonna, before it completely disappears.

I wonder if the painting was done on canvas, as there is a patch of fabric hanging down.

Hello Silvio, it is amazing that the artwork has survived at all when we study the ruined building.
Three interesting shots, a good choice for the main post.
Lovely that the face of the Madonna is still visible, it is a lovely painting.
I guess that it will continue to deteriorate and be lost, probably costing too much money to restore.

No matter how ruined this church is ... the beautiful and serene face of Madonna is still visible and remained intact.
I think you can't escape the power of nature as clearly seen in the WS1&2.
I love the link below. I consider it's part of history what had had happened.
