Baiano di Spoleto Castle. Spoleto (PG)
Little is known about the ancient history of Baiano. The site was located near the important Roman road that connected the two byways of the Flaminia, one passing through Carsulae, the other through Spoleto. The name probably derives from a predial.
This is how Achille Sansi describes it, the most famous Spoleto historian “a place near the city, where it seems to have been baths and places of delight, and where many other inscriptions were found”.
In fact, little can be added, the presence of an irrigated plain of high fertility, the proximity to the important Municipium of Spoletium, lead us to hypothesize the presence of large agricultural settlements and suburban villas, traces of which remain in the numerous epigraphs found in the vicinity.
Equally scarce is the news in the early medieval period, in which the place continues to be densely populated, probably with mainly agricultural settlements, the territory is fertile and then as today rich in waters and mills. Also from Sansi it is known that in 1262 the Ancaiani bought a house in Baiano. In 1455, when the Municipality of Spoleto granted the right to fortify themselves to the inhabitants of Baiano, as a reward for their undisputed loyalty to the city.
Above, in a dominant position on the underlying irrigated plain of Marroggia, are the ruins of the castle of Baiano, from the fourteenth century, built to defend the underlying settlement, to dominate the valley and to control the ancient Roman road, which was to wind nearby and that it remained an important connection with the Arnolfe lands.
The high severed towers, the conspicuous remains of the surrounding walls, the perched position and the difficult access offer a typical example of medieval military architecture. Today it is known by the inhabitants as the Castellaccio.
