Photographer's Note

Siena (population around 55.000) is one of the most enchanting cities of Italy, situated in the magnificent region of Tuscany, and Piazza del Campo is one of the most beautiful squares of the world. Here takes place twice a year (on 2 July and 16 August) one of the most spectacular wild horse races of the world, Il Palio. IL Campo becomes a racetrack, with a ring of packed dirt around its perimeter serving as the course. Before the racetrack a parade takes place with representatives of every town district wearing their traditional colourful costumes and bearing their symbols. Those who 've seen it, describe it as an experience never to forget. Then comes the "main plate". Ten of Siena's 17 town districts (contrade) compete for the coveted Palio (silk banner) at a race that has no equal. The win of the represantive of the contrada, fills with joy and pride his whole district.

In the photo you can see part of the square, the elegant Palazzo Comunale, also known as Palazzo Publico, or town hall, and the impressive bell tower, Torre del Mangia.

Something I would like to add about Siena, is that it was an very pleasant surprise for me. It's one of the most beautiful cities I've seen in my life and I think it's "underestimated". Not knowing of its beauty I had reservation just for one day there, and I can assure you, it was definitely not enough. Please take my advice: Next time you visit enchanting Tuscany, add 2-3 or more days in Siena, in your programme.
