The "torre dell'Elefante" is the second taller medieval tower of Cagliari. The tower was built in 1307, under application from the Pisanis, from the architect Sardinian Giovanni Capula, that two years before had built it "twin" Torre di San Pancrazio. In Spanish epoch the building was also used as jail and to its doors the heads were hung cut of the imprisoned death row inmates and beheaded in the near plazuela (actual piazza Carlo Alberto) as warning. The tower served as defensive rampart for the numerous Genoese attacks and moreschi. Besides serving as defended it was and it is still, together with the Ttorre di San Pancrazio, the principal door to enter into Castello.
