Photographer's Note

Coming by rail, road or air, the city of Bergamo ( Berghem in bergamasque language) strucks by its structure. We distinguish the modern city, the Lower Bergamo, and the upper town, the Città alta.
Città alta includes almost all the historical monuments of the city : we can see a sample here.
From left to right: the bell tower of the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, the Dome of the Sant'Alessandro Cathedral, the campanile of San Pancrazio (in the foreground), the tower of Gombito and the Companone.

The picture is taken from the Rocca, a medieval fortress that dominates the Città alta. The gardens are home to a memorial to fallen soldiers for Italy.
The construction of this fort began in 1331. Many improvements were carried out by the famous Visconti family, who ruled the duchy of Milan from 1277 to 1447.
