Photographer's Note

Man, does Rome do monumental fountains right! The most famous of them is probably Trevi, made popular only really in the 1950s when it was featured in a famous movie, but there are incredible fountains throughout the city which are equally impressive. Rome's love affair with fountains has a long history: it's something of a continuation of the ancient Romans' obsession with the control of water, which isn't surprising, considering that the development of waterworks made habitation possible. Rome was once a swamp, drained to allow for development to flourish.

This incredible fountain, technically the Fontana dell'Acqua Felice, is located in the Quirinale district, and marks the terminus of the Acqua Felice, an aqueduct restored by Pope Sixtus V. It was designed by Domenico Fontana (!) in 1585-88. Also called the Moses Fountain, it features a sculpture beneath a central arch, created by leonardo Sormani and Prospero da Brescia. The left relief panel is somewhat in question: it may depict Aaron, or the miracles by Moses at Mara or Masah and Meriba, where he reportedly struck a rock to bring forth water to the Hebrews who were languishing in the desert. The pope clearly wanted to convey the message that as a modern-day Moses, he had brought water to the citizens of Rome, thus comparing himself, in a rather self-aggrandizing fashion, to Moses. The right relief sculpture may depict Joshua, but it may also depict the ancient Acqua Alessandria, under the Roman emperor Septimius Severus. The aqueduct was credited with the development of the Quirinal neighborhood, which was formerly considered a rural, outlying district of the city. Following the introduction of a stable water supply, however, it became a densely populated city on one of Rome's fabled seven hills.
