Photographer's Note

This famous portrait of Leonardo da Vinci is in the housed in the Capitoline Museum collections. It's far from contemporary with da Vinci's own life, however, having been created in 1813 by Filippo Albacini, entitled simply "Bust of Leonardo da Vinci." It was reportedly inspired by a print translation from a painting by Morghen, based on a portrait now in the Uffizi gallery. It was commissioned by Canova, and was one of a series of marble portraits of illustrious men, to be displayed initially in the Pantheon, but it was moved to its present location in 1820.
