Photographer's Note

A quiet evening of an early summer day in Ostia, near Rome in Italy. Ostia is a suburb of Rome, around 30 km from the city centre. It can be reached by suburban rail. Yet Ostia is a small city, with roughly 200.000 people living here or the surroundings. I live in this area. The photo was shot from the pier in Ostia center. This small city is relatively small being built in the 20's and 30's. Tourism is important but local people should do more to make this place really attractive. Romans flee here during the hot summer days and populate the various "lido's", some of them improved compared to past years. The sun is setting just west below the houses at the end of the city. During winter, the sun will set further south, in the open sea. The water is not so clean, especially in the summer. But in cold north-wind winter days, it can be impressively clean.
