Photographer's Note

RISIERA DI SAN SABBA is a former rice factory in Trieste, northern Italy, that during World War II functioned as a Nazi concentration camp for the detention and killing of political prisoners, and a transit camp for Jews, most of whom died in Auschwitz.

Today, the former concentration camp operates as a museum. Vistting the bare buildings on the outskirts of Trieste left a big impression on us.

Note for readers:

In 2015 Trieste author Claudio Magris published Non luogo a procedere, an impressive (though difficult) novel about the ambivalent (opportunistic) attitude of the Trieste upper class at the time. In English the novel got the title Blameless, in Dutch it is called Het museum van de oorlog.
