Photographer's Note

City of art has always been the historic capital of the Montefeltro (the ancient name of St. Leo until the twelfth century ) , a place of passage of St. Francis and Dante , prison Felice Orsini and the famous adventurer Giuseppe Balsamo, better known as Count Cagliostro, even today it is possible to visit the cells .
San Leo also had the honor of being the capital of Italy , or rather, the Kingdom of Italy Berengar II, who was defeated at Pavia in 961 AD by Otto I of Saxony and then fled to San Leo, where interest the siege for two years before handing the opponent.
The town of San Leo belonged to the Marche (Province of Pesaro and Urbino), until 15 August 2009 when he was seconded jointly with six other municipalities of the Valmarecchia in implementing the outcome of a referendum held on 17 and 18 December 2006.
The town is overlooked by the castle which stands on the highest point of a rock overlooking the Marecchia Valley , surrounded by a series of steep cliffs .

The place was already fortified in Roman times , since the Middle Ages , was bitterly fought over by the Byzantines , Goths , Franks and Longobardila area surrounding the fortress was used for the purpose and strategic defensive , but the current system and the appearance of the site are traced back to the second half of the fifteenth century, a period in which Federico da Montefeltro put in place various works with the supervision of the architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini .
