Photographer's Note

This is the entrance, and the beginning of your visit to the historic site that is Pompeii.

The city of Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples.
On August 24th 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius literally blew its top, spewing tons of molten ash, pumice and sulphuric gas miles into the atmosphere.

The ancient town was being uncovered more than 2 centuries ago, and work still continues. There is much of the site that is out of bounds to the general public, but as an ordinary visitor, you still see enough to get a sense of the place.
