Photographer's Note

Like Pompeii, Herculaneum was overwhelmed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. "The House of the Gem was named after a piece of jewellery found there. The jewellery dates from the Claudian period and bares the engraved effigy of Livia."

The 3 white discs were originally placed as talismans, to ward off evil. They are marble “oscilla,” masks in the Dionysian theme, and served a similar function to the the practice today in Turkey of using a blue and white “nazar boncugu,” to repel evil. In Greece it is known as the μάτι (mati), "eye". More information on the talismans, the evil eye and its alleged power to kill with looks alone here:
