Church of Santa Sofia in Benevento
The church of Santa Sofia represents one of the most singular and atypical Lombard constructions.
The plan is first circular, then stellar and then circular again. Particular features also possess the vaults, which are first quadrangular then rhomboid and then again triangular. The construction was started by Ginulfo II and completed by Arechi II in 760. A monastery is annexed to the church where the beautiful cloister stands out, which today houses a part of the Sannio museum. The church has changed its face over the centuries due to the renovations that have altered the original design. The first restoration took place in medieval times, the original plan was not touched, but the bell tower was added and a bas-relief was added depicting Christ on the throne with the Virgin on the right, San Mercurio martyr on the left and a kneeling monk. The second restoration was carried out in the Baroque period, when after the 1688 earthquake the church was seriously damaged. The reconstruction was done following the Baroque style, thus bringing to the church very radical transformations. The Lombard configuration disappears and the frescoes are destroyed. The stellar part becomes circular, the interior is plastered and furnished according to the Baroque style. The last restoration was carried out in 1957 and attempted to restore the original design of the church. Since 2011 the church has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
