Lucania 61
"That other world, locked in grief and custom, denied to history and the state, eternally patient; to that my land without comfort and sweetness, where the peasant lives, in misery and in the distance, his immobile civilization, on an arid soil, in the presence of death ”. It is the Basilicata by Carlo Levi synthesized in a few lines and "transfigured" admirably in "Lucania '61", a famous work created in the first centenary of the Unification of Italy (now located in Matera inside Palazzo Lanfranchi) dedicated to Rocco Scotellaro , the first poetic symbol of peasant civilization, discovered by the Piedmontese painter and sculptor. In the fresco you experience exciting moments, from the poignant crying of Scotellaro's mother to her prematurely lost son, to the joyful expression of Rocco's face that speaks to his Lucanian peasants in the town square (see WS).
