Piazza del Duomo
It is the baroque to dominate in the central Piazza Duomo. This large courtyard, then modified, dates back to the time of Bishop Jerome Drive. It is accessed through the Propylaea, made towards the end of the eighteenth century by Manieri Emanuele, having been knocked down the walls of the original input.
Piazza Duomo is one of the rare examples of "enclosed square." At one time, in the evening the doors of which are still visible today the imposing hubs were tightened. Whether it's a clear example of Baroque is also evident from the solution to say the least theatrical of the "false front". The visitor who enters in Piazza Duomo is located in front of the façade of the church, that only a careful vision detects "false". E 'enough to cross the threshold of the portal to find himself in the aisle of the church. The cathedral does not accept, then, in front of the visitor, but is placed, the entrance of the square, in a parallel way. The scenographic solution was adopted to prevent the visitors are sitting in front of a wall plate and without decorations.
The architect of Lecce, which worked to harmonize urban design, he realized, to the sides of the Propylaea, the twin buildings that, both on the ground floor arcades reveal a smooth ashlar, now partly closed or transformed into doors and windows. To the left of the square stands the imposing bell tower, designed by Giuseppe Zimbalo, while at the center and the cathedral, in the rearmost position, the bishop. On the right, finally, is the seminar.
