Photographer's Note
A trabocco, traditional fishing platform, at La Penna, near Fossacesia, Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy.
Trabocci are old fishing machines typical of the coast of Abruzzi region. They are massive constructions built from wood consisting of a platform anchored to the rock by large logs of Aleppo pine, jutting out into the sea. From this platform, two (or more) long arms called antennae stretch out suspended some feet above the water, supporting a huge, narrow-meshed net. The earliest documented existence in Abruzzo dates back to 18th century, when fishermen devised an ingenious technique of fishing that wasn't subject to weather conditions. The development of the trabocchi allowed fishing without needing to go to sea. Most are now restaurants or tourist attractions, though some still function, as does the one shown here.

Hi Will
This is really interesting. I've never heard of trabocci, never mind having seen one.
Seeing it through the reeds makes me feel as if I were there (and I really wish that were the case!). It's early autumn but it looks like summer. Lovely light!
Visiting TE once a week or less I too often miss your posts!
Best wishes and greetings from Poland.

Hello Will,
I have seen something very similar to this in Montenegro:
https://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Europe/Montenegro/South/Ulcinj//photo1139802.htm
It was unusual there, and obviously it's unusual in Italy, but it looks like it could have been a convenient way of fishing. It's a nice photo in any case.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Will,
This is a very ingenious way of fishing, without the usual dangers!
I like how you have used the 'furry' grasses to anchor the f/g, setting the scene and creating an excellent sense of depth to the fishing platforms.
The area looks like a charming place to visit.
Did you actually access the fishing platforms or visit one that is now a restaurant?
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Will, I wasn’t aware of these types of structures in Italy. They make for an interesting scene.
I like this particular view looking through the grasses towards the sea and the trabacco.
Informative notes.
Kind regards, Jean.
