Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere - Interior
It is set on three naves divided by pillars with a cruciform section, the decorations of the capitals show various solutions, in the left aisle the arches are pointed arches with double ferrules inserted only towards the inside, a solution widespread in Abruzzo in the late twelfth century, in the right aisle are round arch.
In the central nave above the cornices of the pillars, you can see hanging semi-columns set on "culots", a typical Burgundian element, which testifies to the intervention of Cistercian workers.
The slender frame that runs along the walls of the central nave is also of Burgundian origin, interrupting only on the one occupied by the triumphal arch. The windows are almost all single-lancet windows, inserted on the sides inside blind arches set on cantilever capitals. The naves were vaulted, as evidenced by a report in the Land Registry of 1655, they collapsed, probably due to a telluric event that struck the Val di Sangro in the early eighteenth century, and replaced by wooden trusses, raised in correspondence with the presbytery, decorated with small tiles with triangular geometric motifs in the minor aisles, while in the central nave there are plant motifs.
The transept is raised with respect to the main body, to which it is connected with a flight of steps, as wide as the central nave, through a triumphal arch opening at the level of the first order. Two pointed arches divide the room into three parts, with a width equal to that of each of the three naves. Above the arches there are two cross vaults with ribs, simple crosses cover the lateral areas relative to the minor apses.
The high difference in height between aisles and transept is justified by the presence of a large crypt, one of the largest of the Abruzzo abbeys.
