Photographer's Note

It was originally built around the 16th century by Lord Deputy Mountjoy as a fort. It had a beacon light from a turf fire. Destroyed by fire in 1827 it was rebuilt the following year from the design by James and G.R. Pain. In 2002 the castle underwent an extensive refurbishment program and was reopened in the summer of 2007 as a state of the art observatory and educational facility. Every first Friday of the month the award-winning interactive astronomy exhibit Cosmos at the Castle is open 18:00-22:00 and free to the public.
