Photographer's Note

Allihies is on the Beara Peninsula in West Cork, near Eyries, which Leonie has a picture of:) In the early- and mid-1800s, the town was the site of Puxley copper mines, the ruins of which are scattered throughout the valley (an old mine shaft is sometimes discovered even today). The weather in Beara is capricious (at least in April), as it's on the southwest coast; in a few hours I took pictures in rain, clouds, and brilliant sunshine! This beautiful area of Cork is not very "touristy" and is hidden away amid rocky, nettle and gorse-covered mountains. While there I collected shells on a white sand beach, hiked those forbidding-looking mountains, consumed a lot of tea, and heard a local ghost story by a turf fire. Great trip!

Scanned from a print.
