Photographer's Note

The statues of children created by the artist Maurice Harron, are life size and made from bronze.
They stand in this small park in the centre of Letterkenny.

They are here as a reminder of the past, when there would be an annual hiring fair held in the town. Children between the ages of 11 and 16 were sold for periods of six months to wealthy farmers of the Lagan valley. The farmers needed help on the farm, and the families that were hiring out their children were poor and needed the money.

Between the 17th and 19th centuries hiring fairs became widespread throughout Ireland. This practice survived in Letterkenny, and in Strabane, County Tyrone into the 1940s.
