Photographer's Note

Next fjord ! We leave Dýrafjörður by the road 60 to the north towards Ísafjörður. The road crosses the mountains and then goes down to the beautiful fjord of Önundarfjörður. It is 20 kilometres depth and 4 kilometres at its mouth. The photo was token at the back of the fjord at low tide so we could see a few sandbanks. The main settlement in the fjord is Flateyri, a small fishing village of more than 200 people. The place was hard to reach for a long time, in particular in winter. But the tunnel of Vestfjarðagöng now links the fjord to Ísafjörður in the north and makes the fjord more easy to go. The sides of the fjord are very steep so the area is subject to avalanches. One of them killed 20 people and destroyed 29 houses in october 1995. Imagine what a disaster it was in a village of less than 300 people ...
