Photographer's Note

The image was taken (approx at 65.810393, -23.438579)after making the first major climb from Thingeyri, Dýrafjörður heading to Hrafnseyri on the northern shores of the Arnarfiord Bay.
The white van on the road below is a motorhome. There is also a small blue car on the road further down the hill.(The top side of the lower loop in the road. It had police tape around the car. The car looked as though it had rolled a number of times.

The Westfjords (Vestfirðir) is the name of a large peninsula in northwestern Iceland and an administrative district. It lies on the Denmark Strait, facing the east coast of Greenland. It is connected to the rest of Iceland by a 7 km wide isthmus between Gilsfjörður and Bitrufjörður. The Westfjords are very mountainous; the coastline is heavily indented by dozens of fjords surrounded by steep hills. These indentations make roads very circuitous and communications by land difficult. In addition many of the roads are closed by ice and snow for several months of the year.
The Westfjords are very sparsely populated: the total population in 2007 was 7,380. The district capital and by far the largest settlement is Ísafjörður (population around 4000).
In 1996 the Vestfjarðagöng tunnel opened in the Westfjords region; it ended the winter isolation of Flateyri and Suðureyri linking them with Ísafjörður. This tunnel was the last one built with single-lane segments. It h as a length of 9,113 m.
