Photographer's Note

On our second day in Iceland, before going to the south coast, we first visited Harpa, the Reykjavik opera house. This building was opened in may 2011. It hosts concert halls and a conference centre. It also has a bar, a restaurant and a few shops. It was designed by the danish architect office Henning Larsen, helped by the icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. It is a steel framework coebered with glass panels of different shapes and colours. The photo shows a closer view on the roof inside the building. The buidling won the Mies van der Rohe price in 2013.

Anyway, this building could have been never ended ! It was originally part of a big project including hotels, restaurants, apartments, a shopping centre, a car park and the new headquarters of the icelandic bank Landsbanki. But the financial crisis in 2008 was very strong in Iceland and the construction of Harpa was stopped ... Finally the icelandic governement decided to finish Harpa but the rest of the project was cancelled. Today the icelandic people are proud of this beautiful piece of modern architecture !
