Photographer's Note

The Dominican church and monastery of Vasvár was built in the middle of the 13th century - in a very hard period of the Hungarian history due to the extremely devastating Mongol invasion in 1241-42. The monks left the monastery in the middle of the 16th century due to the Hungarian-Turkish wars lasting for 150 years, then returned at the end of 17th century, then left again in 1950 due to the Soviet occupation. The history seems to run here like a Ferris-wheel: up and down, up and down...
Despite the storms of history the complex is essentially still the same as built 750 years ago and is the oldest existing church/monastery building of any Mendicant order in Hungary.

By clicking on the map function you can see the location of Vasvár (once the capital of Vas county, now a small town with about 5000 inhabitants) and the monastery.
