Photographer's Note

This is the façade of the New Hungarian National Theatre, it was opened in 2002. It replaced the beloved old building in a centre of Budapest, which was demolished during the construction of a Metro line in 1964. It took a long time to agree on the location and style of the new theatre. After considering many alternatives it was decided to place it on bank of the Danube outside the historical inner city, and use the modernist design of architect Mária Siklós. I put another view into the Workshop. It was new and controversial when I took this picture in 2003, now it may look somewhat different and not so new.
