Photographer's Note

This is a memorial of the Hungarian Fighters in the Spanish International Brigades (A spanyolországi nemzetközi brigádok magyar harcosainak emlékműve), it is the work of Memos Makris (1913-1993), a renown Greek sculptor who lived in Hungary for many years as an exile because he was a Communist. He was known in Hungary as Makrisz Agamemnon, several of his sculptures still stands in public places in Hungary and elsewhere in Europe. This piece was erected in 1968 in downtown Budapest, but was moved to Memento Park in 1992, after the fall of the Communist regime.
The International Brigade helped to fight the leftist forces in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), the role of the Hungarian communist who participated in it was a minor one, 56 Hungarian died in the battles from the estimated 500 to 1000 participants. One of the participant (Laszlo Rajk) who become a prominent politician in Hungary after WWII was killed in Hungary by his comrades after a show trial in 1949.
