Iraklion Harbour, a photo from Iraklion, Crete

Photographer's Note

A nocturnal shot of Iraklion (Heraklion) Harbour with the old Venetian Fortress in the bg. In those days it was known as 'Candia'. It took the Ottomans 5 wars with the Venetians to finally seize Crete in 1669. The Venetians retook the fortress 15 years later but Ottoman control over the rest of Crete remained until 1897. It was united with Greece in 1913.

Fine night shot at the port of Iraklion. Contrast from the dark surrounding and the illuminated boats marvelously rendered.

Hello Chris,
The boats are simple but nice and they are well exposed in the darkness. The Venetian fortress is the most interesting feature, so you made a good choice of shooting angle to include it.

Hi Chris,
I was staying in Hania so I gave up on Iraklion, with the exception of Knossos which I felt was a must.
Charming night capture. I don't remember seeing a marina photo taken at night before. There is a lot of warm light to illuminate the scene. Also the walls in the distance stand out well.

Good point of view to include the Koules fortress on the background.
The predominantly white boats stand out strongly in the dark water.

Hello Chris,

I never saw this part of Crete at night, only a visit during daytime.
You have shown that it had a lovely atmosphere, the boats illuminated and well placed for f/g interest. Even as a nocturnal photograph, we can see ghostly reflections.
The illuminated fortress continues the interest, right into the b/g.
Did you have a tripod?
It is a good, sharp night shot.
