Photographer's Note

Syros is a Greek island in the Cyclades. The area of the island is 83.6 km2 and it has 21,507 inhabitants.Ermoupoli is the capital of the island and of the Cyclades. Ermoupoli stands on a naturally amphitheatrical site, with neo-classical buildings cascading down to the harbour. The streets of Ermoupoli are paved in marble. Not asphalt or concrete, but slippery-smooth white marble. There are great marble mansions and fancy marble buildings that date back to the mid-1800s, when the city was rebuilt in a Neoclassical style. It was built during the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s. Dubbed the "City of Hermes", Syros has numerous churches, such as Metamorphosis, Koimisis and St. Demetrius. There is an archaeological museum and a municipal library.
